Report: Qualifying Report, Zandvoort 2011

Mercedes and Audi set the pace in final Qualifying session of 2011

In an incident packed qualifying session for Rounds 11 and 12 of the FIA GT3 European Championship at Zandvoort it was a 1-2 for Heico Motorsport in the first session, with Round 9 winner Dominik Bauman setting the fastest time of 1:38.894. However the two Heico Mercedes both received 10-grid place penalties for a red flag infringement during yesterday's Free Practice session, promoting the nr1 Prospeed Competition Porsche of Paul van Splunteren to the front of the grid for this afternoon's race. The qualifying session was halted with 3-minutes remaining after the nr14 Fischer Racing Ford spun off into the bariers at T4, damaging the Armco and the car, with Miko Eskelinen emerging unscathered.

After a delay to repair the damaged barrier the second qualifying session got underway. At the end of the 20-minute session 2009 FIA GT3 Champion Christopher Haase scored his first pole position in the championship since Zolder in 2009 by posting a 1:38.920 lap in the nr33 Belgian Audi Club Team WRT Audi R8. Haase was 0.3s faster than the nr11 Gravity Charouz Racing Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG of Stefan Rosina and a further tenth of a second ahead of Mike PArisy in the nr3 Graff Racing Mercedes.

Round 11 of the FIA GT3 European Championship will start at 15:45 this afternoon.
